지난 12월 7일, 페미니스트 법학자 캐서린매키넌 초청강연이 뜨거운 열기 속에 진행되었는데요, 그 자리에는 성매매경험당사자네트워크’뭉치’도 함께했습니다. ‘뭉치’의 지음이 전하는 강연 후기를 공유합니다.
마법을 부리는 용감한 나비
캐서린 매키넌 선생님과의 만남은 성매매경험당사자인 ‘뭉치’활동을 지탱하게 하는 힘을 느낄 수 있는 시간이 되었습니다. ‘뭉치’는 한국에서 2006년부터 2020년인 지금까지 성매매경험당사자운동을 하며 우리의 활동에 확신을 가지다가도 가끔 의심이 들때도 있었습니다. 하지만 다시금 생각하게 됩니다. ‘뭉치’가 하고 있는 당사자운동이 세상을 바꾸는 용감한 ‘나비’의 날개 짓이라는 것을 믿습니다.
저희는 한국에서 ‘성매매’의 착취구조에 대해 말하며 성매매현장에 수많은 여성들이 더 이상 이용되지 않을 수 있도록 한국사회와 싸우고 있습니다. ‘뭉치’ 회원들이 한 성매매경험은 듣고 싶어 하지 않는 사람들, 성구매자들, 알선업자들에게 분명 자극을 주고 있으며, 작지만 세상은 변화하고 있다고 믿어 의심치 않습니다. 성매매경험당사자운동을 하면서 이 운동에 동의하며 스스로를 반성매매 나비가 되어버리는 사람들이 많아지고 있기에 어느순간 여성을 착취하고자 하는 생각조차 떠올릴 수 없는 세상이 될 것이란 확신을 가지고, 활동을 하고 있습니다.
수 백명의 여성들 앞에서 캐서린 매키넌 선생님의 강좌는 그 자리에 함께한 뭉치 회원들에게 큰 감동을 주었고, 지금 그 순간을 떠올려도 눈시울이 붉어지고, 가슴이 따뜻해집니다. 성매매경험당사자인 우리는 ‘성매매’이야기엔 늘 날을 세워 듣게 됩니다. 그들의 말에 성매매여성은 어떻게 표현되는지 집중하게 되죠. 하지만 이번 만남에서는 긴장하지 않아도 되었습니다. 그냥 그 순간 뭉치의 슬로건인 ‘우리의 존재가 실천이다’처럼 그대로 저를 인정하게 되었거든요. 그 자리에서 펑펑 울어도 될 것 같았습니다. 그 공간에 있는 모두가 서로를 위로하는 것처럼 느껴졌습니다. 사실 그때 전국에 퍼져있는 많은 ‘뭉치’회원들 얼굴이 떠올라 더 눈물을 주체하지 못했던 것 같습니다. 그날 그 자리에 함께 했다면 지금의 감동을 공유할 수 있었을텐데 하면서요.
“세상이 부정하고, 억누르며 마치 존재하지 않는 것처럼 취급당했던 성매매여성은 피해를 경험하면서 생존해야했기 때문에 힘이 있습니다. 그 여성들이 세상에서 가장 똑똑한 여성들입니다. 그리고 생존자 여성들이 탈성매매를 하기 위해서 필요했던 힘은 우리 모두에게 힘이 되어 줄 것입니다.”(캐서린 매키넌, 2019)
제가 만약 성매매경험당사자 운동을 하면서 지칠 때가 있다면 꼭 그날 캐서린 매키넌 선생님의 말을 떠올릴 것입니다. 우리와 함께 세상을 바꾸는 멋진 나비가 있다는 것에 감사합니다. ‘뭉치’회원에게 혹시 하고 싶은 말이 있냐고 물어보았습니다. “캐서린 매키넌 선생님, 존재만으로도 힘이 납니다. 사랑합니다.”라고 꼭 전하고 싶다고 합니다.

Brave Butterflies Who Make Magic Happen
A meeting with Catharine MacKinnon created an opportunity to feel the force that supports Moongchi’s activism as women with experiences in prostitution.
Since 2006 Moongchi has stood against prostitution and has led the movement as a survivor network with strong conviction, but from time to time we have also had moments of doubt.
But we are reminded again that Moongchi’s activism itself is the flapping wings of those brave butterflies that change the world. We believe in this.
By speaking out against the exploitative structure of “prostitution” in Korea, we fight Korean society so that no more women will be used in prostitution.
We wholeheartedly believe that the experiences of prostitution spoken by members of Moongchi are indeed changing the world, even in small ways, and that they are making an impact on even those who do not want to listen, still want to buy sex, and/or procure prostitution.
We are confident, that as we continue our activism, more and more allies will join us as butterflies against prostitution and that one day we will live in a world where sexually exploiting women is unthinkable.
Catharine’s speech deeply moved members of Moongchi, who were there along with hundreds of other women. The emotions shared with her make us tear up and warm our hearts even at this very moment.
We, as women who have experienced prostitution, are always the most critical listeners when it comes to the topic of “prostitution.”
We tend to get wary of how prostituted women are represented in their own words.
Listening to Catharine, however, did not invoke such tension.
Because at that very moment, I was able to accept myself for who I was, just like Moongchi’s slogan, “our existence itself is practice,”
I felt safe enough to cry my eyes out. It was as if everybody in that space was consoling each other.
I lost control of my tears because the faces of the members across the country came to my mind, and I wished they all could be there with me to share the moment.
“Everything that is denied, everything that is suppressed, everything that is, that the rest of the world acts like isn’t true, they know. They are the smartest people in society. And what it took for them to get out of that is going to give everyone what you need to fight against this system.”

If there comes a time when I get weary in my activism as a survivor, I will come back to these words.
We are grateful that there is such a wonderful butterfly changing the world with us.
