National Solidarity against Sexual Exploitation of Women – October Activities

Title: National Solidarity against Sexual Exploitation of Women – October Activities Update

In October, the National Solidarity against Sexual Exploitation of Women participated in various solidarity activities. One significant effort was our involvement in the Joint Task Force to prevent the demolition of a former detention center for women who failed venereal disease (VD) inspections in Dongducheon. This facility was used during Korea’s military dictatorship to forcibly detain women under the pretext of controlling sexually transmitted infections. These women lived and worked in military brothels in U.S. camp-towns near American military bases, where they were subjected to exploitation with the collaboration of both the Korean and U.S. governments.

The city of Dongducheon is currently pushing to demolish this historic site under the guise of redevelopment. However, the National Solidarity stands firmly against the demolition, emphasizing the importance of preserving the site as a reminder of state violence and the exploitation of women.

In addition to this, the National Solidarity continues its involvement in other coalitions, such as the Coalition for the Revision of the Rape Law and networks supporting victims of gender-based violence. We sincerely appreciate your continued support for our solidarity efforts!
