National Solidarity against Sexual Exploitation of Women - June Activities Update
[Launch of the Legislative Task Force on Violence Against Women Joining the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, and Civil Society Organizations]
On Friday, June 12, at 10:00 AM, the Ministry of Justice launched a collaborative task force with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and organizations supporting victims of violence against women, holding its first meeting at the Ministry of Justice.
During this initial meeting, participants discussed high-priority legislative agendas proposed by the supporting organizations—such as establishing a legal framework for intimate partner violence and updating terminology in the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes—along with topics requiring further study, including overseas legislative precedents, as well as the task force's future timeline and operating methods. As this task force has been officially established for legislative progress, we hope it will lead to meaningful outcomes.
As a participating organization, NSASEW will continue to fulfill its role to ensure that key legislative tasks on violence against women, including the revision of the Act on the Punishment of Arrangement of Commercial Sex Acts, move forward promptly.
[Questioning the Phenomenon Surrounding Female BJs Through Feminism]
On Thursday, June 18, a roundtable discussion titled "Questioning the Phenomenon Surrounding Female BJs Through Feminism" was hosted by the Korea Cyber Sexual Violence Response Center (KCSVRC) at the Lee Angela Hall of the Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center.
This event was organized to share ongoing questions and reflections following KCSVRC's statement released in April: "We Reject the Binary of 'Sunny Side' and 'Dark Side': On the Cancellation of Female Internet Broadcasters' Advertising Model Contracts and Cybermobs."
NSASEW also participated as a speaker. We suggested that while the women's movement has long advocated for the "right to not engage in prostitution," we must now expand this discourse to include the "right to not be consumed" and, further, the "right to not be sexually commodified." Furthermore, we emphasized the need to directly confront and challenge the deceptive structure that forces women to constantly become "well-selling products" to survive, only to expel them later for failing to meet the standards of "normalcy."
Building on the discussions and insights shared on this day, the National Coalition will continue to deeply analyze the evolving nature of the sex industry and the objectification of women, while fostering the language and practices of a women's movement that critiques the structural foundations enabling sexual exploitation.
