National Solidarity against Sexual Exploitation of Women – December Activities Update(25.12)

December Update from the National Solidarity against Sexual Exploitation of Women

On December 12, the National Solidarity against Sexual Exploitation of Women published its first project-based book, Eradicating Prostitution. This book was written by a diverse group of contributors, including survivor-activists, researchers, educators, and a judge, and documents the international solidarity work that the National Solidarity has carried out over the past several years. Contributors also include Nito Yumeno of Colabo, an anti-prostitution activist organization in Japan, as well as members of Tōka, a Japanese survivor-led group of people with lived experience of prostitution. Below, you can find a brief introduction to the book along with links for purchase.

About the Book What comes to mind when you think about “the problem of prostitution”? Ji-eum, a survivor-activist and co-author of this book, poses this question and reflects: “No one believes there are places where exploitation is acceptable, or people who may be exploited. Yet reality tells a different story. Sex buyers believe that in certain places, certain women may be exploited, and they visit brothels with this very purpose. Under state tolerance and management, such spaces and such people exist throughout the world. Why is this reality allowed to persist?”

Although Ji-eum has been engaged in anti-prostitution activism for more than twenty years after exiting prostitution, she says she still feels “a sense of suffocation, with no clear solution in sight.” The National Solidarity and the book’s authors share a determination to change this reality.

Building on decades of work supporting women in prostitution, advocating for legal reform, raising public awareness, and engaging in international solidarity and comparative research, the National Solidarity states clearly: “Prostitution is structural sexual exploitation of women and fundamentally obstructs gender equality.” With a sense that things cannot continue as they are, the organization has, since 2018, visited activists and experts in various countries and studied relevant laws, policies, and administrative systems.

Across the world, women are traded without limit, many states effectively contribute to the spread of violence, and research and policy debates remain stalled, constrained by the logic of capital and power. So what must be done? The survivor-activists, researchers, educators, judges, and allies who contributed to this book offer their answers from their respective positions. Centering the global “sites” where violence against women is produced, the book introduces current laws, administrative realities, debates, and international solidarity efforts from different countries, and proposes strategies for change. Readers are invited to engage with these reflections, practices, and visions for the future—and to join in the effort to eradicate prostitution.
