August Update from the National Solidarity against Sexual Exploitation of Women
As summer drew to a close in August, the Women’s Human Rights Center “Boda” continued to meet with women in Mia-ri through various activities. This month, we also set up an on-site counseling booth in Mia-ri, joined by lawyers from the “Response Team against Sexual Exploitation” of the Lawyers for a Democratic Society (MINBYUN).
Meanwhile, the National Solidarity against Sexual Exploitation of Women, together with Saeumteo, has taken on the role of co-secretariat for the Joint Committee for Truth-Finding and Restoration of Honor for Victims of U.S. Military Sexual Exploitation. In 2014, 122 former U.S. military comfort women filed a lawsuit against the South Korean government to establish the state’s responsibility for the U.S. military camptown prostitution system. After eight years of tireless legal struggle, on September 29, 2022, the Supreme Court recognized the women as victims of state violence.

Determined to ensure that such a history will never be repeated, the plaintiffs have now resolved to file a damages lawsuit directly against the U.S. military, seeking accountability for its unlawful practices and truth about the U.S. military camptown prostitution system. As co-secretariat of the Joint Committee, the National Solidarity will support and publicize the women’s lawsuit. We ask for your continued attention and solidarity with this effort.
